Who would have ever thought that the day would come when alternative medicine(supplements) and traditional medicine(pharmaceutical drugs) could partner together as a complete therapy to address major health issues and improve the quality of life for millions, if not billions.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE VALUE OF SUPPLEMENTS
Vitamins And Minerals In Foods
Time for a reality check. For a long time the medical arena has been frowning on supplements. Some believe that supplements have no major impact in the health and wellness of those suffering from major health issues especially cancer.
However, extensive research reveals that supplements( vitamins and minerals) are critical components in the quest for better health.
VITAMINS are classified into two categories:fat soluble(A,D,E,and K) and water soluble(B complex and C) Fat-soluble vitamins are found in fats and oils in foods and are stored in the body fat. Water-soluble vitamins dissolves in water and mix easily in the blood.
Your body stores only a small amount of water-soluble vitamins and excretes them in the urine. For that reason, you need to consume them regularly to maintain an adequate supply. Some vitamins are antioxidants-- chemicals that prevent damaging changes in cells that can produce chronic inflammation which play in many common diseases including heart disease, some cancers, and Alzheimer's disease, and many of the effects of aging. FAT-SOLUBLE VITAMINS
Vitamin A-- Antioxidant required for the growth and development and healthy immune function, vision and skin.
Vitamin D-- Increases calcium absorption; build strong bones and teeth.
Vitamin E-- Antioxidant; helps form blood cells, muscle, and lung and nerve tissue; boost the immune system.
Vitamin K-- Helps blood clot.
Beta Carotene-- Antioxidant; used by the body to make vitamin A.
WATER-SOLUBLE VITAMINS
Vitamin B1(thiamine)-- Helps convert food into energy.
Vitamin B2(riboflavin)-- Plays a role in energy production; helps maintain healthy eyes, skin and nerve function.
Vitamin B3(niacin)-- Fat-metabolism, proper digestion and a health nervous system.
Vitamin B5(pantothenic acid)-- Essential for numerous chemical reactions needed to sustain life.
Vitamin B6(pyridoxine)-- Helps convert carbohydrates into glucose(sugar) to produce energy; essential for the metabolism of fats and proteins; promotes health of the nervous system, skin, hair, eyes, mouth and liver.
Vitamin B9(folic acid)-- Needed for new cell formation, normal red blood cell production and DNA production.
Vitamin B12(cyanocobalamin)-- Needed for normal blood formation, healthy nervous system; helps produce DNA.
Vitamin C--Antioxidant needed to maintain healthy connective tissue, collagen, bone and teeth.
Biotin-- Needed for metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
MAJOR MINERALS
Calcium-- Maintain normal heart muscle, and nerve function; keep teeth and bones healthy.
Chromium-- Regulates blood sugar by boosting effects of insulin.
Copper---- Essential for the healthy of the heart and for making hemoglobin and collagen.
Iodine--- Essential for production of thyroid hormone, which is crucial fro normal growth and development.
Iron---- Essential for red blood cell development and transport of oxygen in the blood stream.
Magnesium--- Promotes muscle and nerve function; maintain teeth and bones.
Manganese--- Needed for proper muscle, nerve and enzyme function; helps produces fatty acids and cholesterol in the liver.
Phosphorous--- Helps form genetic material; builds strong bones and teeth; maintain acid-base balance; needed for energy production.
Potassium--- Maintains body fluid balance; transmit nerves signals; regulate blood pressure; prevents irregular heartbeat.
Selenium--- Antioxidant; essential for healthy functioning of the heart muscle.
Zinc----- Involved in the wound healing, the normal fluid balance of the skin, taste and smell; works with more than 70 different enzymes.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Well, all the evidence points to the fact that vitamins and minerals are absolutely essential not only for health reasons, but more importantly for life itself. Let us not fool ourselves, we cannot get the needed supply of vitamins and minerals in our present food chain. SUPPLEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL.
Nutritional experts agree that supplements can compensate for the loss nutrients due to the food chain. So, if you are not taking a multi-mineral/multi-vitamin then you are robbing yourself of good health and a longer life.
