Vitamins to Get Pregnant - The Top 5 Vitamins and Minerals You Need When Trying to Get Pregnant

You only need to take vitamins once you are pregnant, right? Wrong! If you are trying to conceive it is always a smart move to take vitamins to get pregnant. The very same nutrients that help you once you are pregnant will also help you while you are still trying, and most prenatal supplements on the market provide you with all the important vitamins and minerals you not only need when you are pregnant but also before.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Vitamin B12 for example is a vital vitamin when it comes to fertility. A B12 deficiency has been shown to cause ovulation issues and can be one of the many reasons for repeat miscarriages.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Another important vitamin, especially if you seem to have problems with ovulation is Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a vitamin that is naturally only present in very few foods, and unless you take a vitamin supplement or sunbathe often, it is very likely that you do not get enough Vitamin D.

Iron is a mineral on the list that can give you a good fertility boost. Most women's iron stores, however, are empty after their periods. If you have quite heavy periods and lose quite a bit of blood, you might need to take an iron supplement or eat food that contains a lot of iron (for example leafy greens such as kale and spinach, beef, peas, dried apricots, and dried beans) to fill up those stores again.

Zinc is another essential mineral that is present in most prenatal supplements. A zinc deficiency can slow down one of the most important processes when it comes to trying to conceive, the maturation of your eggs. This means that it might take a whole lot longer for the eggs in your ovaries to mature and grow into good-quality eggs. And that is definitely not something you want when trying to conceive.

Are you already afraid of the nausea and vomiting during the early stages of pregnancy? Take some Vitamin B6 now and you are less likely to experience any of the above.

One of the most important, if not the most important vitamin when it comes to trying to conceive is the B Vitamin Folic Acid. It is a vital vitamin when trying to get pregnant, and a high enough dose before you are pregnant dramatically lowers the risks of your baby developing neural tube defects, cardiac defects, and it may also lower the risk of premature delivery. Taking at least 400mcg of folic acid for 3 months (12 months is even better) before you conceive has shown to be a good dosage.

What's even more relevant to your plans to get pregnant is that folic acid has also been linked to increased fertility!

Vitamins For Joint Pain - Nutritional Therapies to Heal Inflammation and Pain

Arthritis and joint pain can be a debilitating condition for most sufferers. A reduction in the cartilage tissue that cushions the joints is the primary symptom of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Although they have different causes, most diseases that cause joint pain are characterized by high levels of inflammatory.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Because conventional medicine has little to offer by way of a cure, doctors recommend prescription drugs like Ibuprofen and Aspirin that can cause serious side effects and organ damage when taken for long time. But there are many natural ways for sufferers of joint pain to get relief from the agony.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Arthritis sufferers are advised to follow general precautions such as getting adequate rest and water, not exercising too much, using compresses, avoiding alcohol, practicing yoga or another low-impact exercise natural. Following a healthy diet and avoiding inflammatory foods such as red meats, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, and tomatoes can also help curb inflammation.

A growing number of doctors and nutritional experts have come to believe that diet plays a primary role in the onset of inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Doctors like Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a leading advocate of the anti-inflammatory diet, recommend a diet that is low in simple carbohydrates such as sugar, processed foods, pasta, breads, pastry and baked products. These are high-glycemic index foods that can increase levels of the pro-inflammatory peptides in the body.

Perricone recommends an anti-inflammatory diet that includes consuming a high quality protein (such as tuna or salmon), adequate amounts of essential fatty acids, as well as colorful fresh fruits and vegetables. The reason this diet works to reduce inflammation is because it supplies a number of essential nutrients that can heal inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and autoimmune disease.

Essential fatty acids like those found in salmon, flax, nuts, seeds and olive oil, can significantly curb inflammation, reduce pain and swelling, improve joint mobility and prevent further degeneration of joints. However they have to be taken over months to see a noticeable effect.

Supplementation with folic acid has been found to reduce hip fractures resulting from osteoporosis. Taking a good supplement that provides bone minerals such as magnesium and calcium is essential for sufferers of joint pain. Zinc has also been shown to relieve joint pain and stiffness. A good supplement will also include Vitamin D and B6, as well as antioxidant vitamins like A, C and E.

Other nutritional substances that have been shown to significantly reduce inflammation in a number of studies are turmeric, which was found to reduce symptoms by 73%, and bromelain, a protease enzyme derived from pineapples. Anti-oxidants like alpha-lipoic acid are also recommended as part of the anti-inflammatory diet.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), an organic sulfur-containing nutrient, has proved helpful in relieving symptoms of knee osteoarthritis and reducing pain. Also recommended are nutrients like chondroitin, which helps build cartilage, and glucosamine, which curbs inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory herbs such as boswellia, and immune-regulating herbs like ashwagandha and ginseng can regulate a hypersensitive immune system and lower levels of pro-inflammatory metabolites. Other herbs used to heal achy joints are St Johns wort, celery seed, angelica, juniper, sarsaparilla, devils claw, wild yam and willow bark.

A good joint supplement may not contain all these ingredients, but including some of them as part of your daily intake can help heal a number of inflammatory and joint conditions.

A Holistic Vet's Guide to Pet Food, Part IV - "Complete and Balanced" - What Does That Really Mean?

On most pet food labels, there will be a statement indicating that the food is "complete and balanced" for a particular life stage of the pet (there are only two: growth/reproduction and adult).

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

A pet food may be labeled as "complete and balanced" if it meets AAFCO standards. There are two methods for achieving this: (1) meeting published standards for content, or (2) feeding tests. If a food does not meet either of these standards, it will be labeled "for intermittent and supplemental feeding only." Such foods are fine as treats or for short periods of time, but should not be fed as the sole diet. Keep in mind, too, that the standards, such as they are, set only "minimums" and "maximums," not "optimums." Commercial pet foods are designed to be adequate for the average animal, but may not be suitable for an individual animal's variable needs.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

(1) Nutrient Profiles. These standards set the required amounts of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and so forth. When adopted in 1989, they were the best information available on canine nutritional needs. New research was published in 2003 that provides up-to-date information, but new standards are still in the process of being adopted by AAFCO and/or the states, and are not currently being followed by pet food manufacturers.

Moreover, any manufacturer can synthesize a food containing sufficient amounts of each ingredient according to the Nutrient Profiles, yet dogs may not do well on it because the standards do not address the issues of "bioavailability" of nutrients to the animal. Certain forms of vitamins and minerals, for example, are poorly absorbed from the digestive tract. A noted veterinary nutrition textbook claims that a food can be created from old leather boots, wood shavings, and crankcase oil that will meet the technical requirements for protein, carbohydrates, and fats, yet would be completely indigestible. Unfortunately, given the ingredients used by some manufacturers, "Old Boot" may be closer to the truth than anyone wants to admit!

(2) Feeding Trials. These are considered the "gold standard" of pet food formulation. However, when you look at the actual AAFCO protocols for an adult maintenance diet, a manufacturer must feed exclusively the test food to only six animals for six months. (Eight animals are required at the outset; however, two of them may be dropped from the trial for non-diet-related reasons.) Foods intended for growth and reproduction must be tested for only 10 weeks.

Most of the large, reputable pet food producers, such as Iams, Hills, Walthams and Purina, maintain large colonies of dogs and cats, and test their foods on hundreds of animals over years or even multiple generations. Other manufacturers rely on facilities that keep animals for this purpose to do the studies for them.

It is easy to see how a poor quality diet could be fed for only six months without seeing adverse health effects, and legitimately be labeled as meeting AAFCO standards. In fact, studies have confirmed that even foods that pass feeding trials may still be utterly inadequate for long-term maintenance.

Worse still is AAFCO's "family rule" which was heavily promoted by the pet food industry. This rule declares that foods that are "nutritionally similar" to a food that has passed an actual feeding test may also carry that claim. The "similarity" need only be that the foods have a similar calorie content. This leaves the "feeding test" label as a completely unreliable indicator of the quality of the food, and its status as a "gold standard" in serious doubt.

Life Stages. As mentioned above, there are only 2 life stages recognized by the AAFCO standards: adult maintenance, and growth/reproduction, which includes puppies and kittens as well as pregnant and lactating (nursing) mothers. Foods claiming adequacy for "All Life Stages" meet the higher nutritional requirements of growth/reproduction.

This means that there are no separate standards, and thus no regulations about, food for "senior" or "mature" pets, foods designed for "Yorkshire Terriers" or "Persian Cats," or foods for "high performance" or "indoor" animals. These designations are purely marketing hype. Yes, the ingredients may be a little different, or the protein or fiber content may have been manipulated, but every single niche food must still meet one of those same two basic requirements. A claim of "light" or "reduced calories" does have to be a certain percentage less calories than the food it is being compared to, but whether such foods actually help pets lose weight in a healthy manner is highly debatable.

Hair Growth Vitamins and Minerals

There is some evidence from a few small studies that the western diet has changed significantly in the last 20 years and there are certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies likely to be found in a typical American diet.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

There are nutrients and herbs that have the potential to affect hair growth in a positive or negative way.
There are three basic ways that nutritional diet vitamin supplements and amino acid supplements may act influence the hair follicles. The mineral rich and vitamin supplements may act directly on hair stimulating or inhibiting growth activity or they may act indirectly through other intermediaries. For example, a vitamin supplement or herb may influence the production of a hormone to which hair follicles are sensitive. This change in hormone activity in turn may change the activity of the hair follicles.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Some minerals and vitamins can influence the activity levels of another vitamin and minerals. For example, intake of lysine, vitamin B12 and vitamin C help in absorption of other factors like iron. It is worth bearing in mind that the complexity of the body means there are many potential interactions for even the simplest nutrient.

Vitamins for hair & hair growth

Since Vitamin C, helps the absorption of other factors, it is of some significance. Others are of secondary importance to hair growth like vitamin E. Vitamin E is necessary to provide good blood circulation to the scalp by increasing the uptake of oxygen. Not fundamentally required in a hair growth supplement, vitamin E is often present largely because people expect to see it in the ingredients - and the customer is always right!

Other common ingredients like the amino acids - L-Cysteine and L-methioine are of questionable value. Although they are fundamentally required for good hair growth, even a rather unhealthy diet should provide enough of these amino acids and supplementation is rarely required.

Vitamin supplements' vitamins

The supplement industry is worth several billion dollars a year and it is still growing rapidly. Vitamin supplements, mineral supplements and herbal supplements available on net come in all shapes and forms, many of which are specifically advertised to promote healthy hair growth.

These 'vitamin supplements' vitamins are marketed by different names such as liquid vitamin supplements, natural vitamin supplements, daily vitamin supplements, nutritional vitamin supplements and also by such names as mail order vitamin supplements or best vitamins supplements.

But the for the most part, with a few notable exceptions like vitamin A & Folic acid, taking these supplements probably does not harm hair growth. But whether they can really help promote hair growth depends on what the actual cause of the hair loss is and how the supplements or active ingredients in herbs interact with the hair follicles.

Vitamin and herbal supplements

To buy online health supplements or herbal treatment requires you to go for quality. Unfortunately there is no universal method by which quality supplements can be identified. So it is best to depend upon the natural vitamins supplements or fresh foods.

Typically, vitamins and minerals are most concentrated in fresh foods, the older the food is, and the more processed it is, the less nutritious it is. So in principle, the average diet of the early twenty first century may be more deficient in certain nutrients required for healthy hair growth compared to the average diet of the mid to late twentieth century, but it should be emphasized that vitamin and mineral deficiency is still rarely a cause of hair loss.

Hair loss vitamins & minerals

In other words, do not waste your time on searching for vitamin supplements on net unless you have a deficiency detected by a blood test. A comprehensive test for vitamin and mineral levels when one or more is suspected as a cause of hair loss would include; serum iron, serum ferritin, and total iron binding capacity, serum zinc. The deficiency which directly affects hair growth can be related to vitamin (H) biotin, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12. You can go for testing for others if they are on offer, but biotin and B6 testing is enough to cover 95% of vitamin deficiencies related to hair loss. And only when such a deficiency is detected by the tests that you need to buy and eat the 'vitamin supplements' vitamins. So the bottom line is that it is better to have the natural supplements through a balanced diet.

Whole Food Vitamins Vs Synthetic

There is a substantial difference between whole food vitamins and synthetic vitamins. This short article aims at explaining this crucial difference and implications that taking one or the other kind has for our wellbeing.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

Whole food supplements are derived from naturally-occurring, full-spectrum food extracts. To understand this better, it's crucial to define what 'naturally-occurring' means. By taking a nutrient rich-plant, removing the excess water and fiber via a chemical-free vacuum process, to later package it for stability, is the most common way of obtaining a 'naturally-occurring' vitamin. This way, the entire vitamin complex is captured intact, retaining its nutritional integrity and full spectrum values. Whole food supplements can be defined as highly complex structures that combine a variety of enzymes, coenzymes, trace elements, antioxidants, and activators that all work together synergistically in your body as co-factors for each other's efficacy. Natural vitamins contain the essential trace minerals necessary for the synergy with your body to occur.

Vitamins And Minerals In Foods

On the other hand, synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals and are forced to use your body's already existing resources and mineral reserves to perform like the whole food, natural supplements. If within the chemical compound of synthetic vitamins, one part is missing, or is fractionated, the entire chain of metabolic processes cannot proceed normally.

Only intake of naturally-occurring vitamins, found in wholesome organic foods can most benefit our body's performance. Numerous studies and articles have proven that daily consumption of synthetic vitamins 'from A-Z' create toxic and adverse reactions in the body. There is an enormous difference between vitamins found in natural foods unaltered chemically, and those manufactured, drug-like substances that are called vitamins which are in no way beneficial.

For a nutritional effect, repair, and maintenance of all biochemical activities in the body, only natural, whole vitamin "complexes" as they exist in whole foods are acceptable and make a positive difference. Unfortunately, most vitamin products fond in healthy food stores and pharmacies, primarily contain synthetic vitamins. Numerous studies conducted, have proven that the intake of isolated vitamin pills and supplements does not function as effectively as complete natural vitamin intake and is not efficiently utilized in the body.

The most popular vitamin supplements contain ultra high doses of synthetic vitamins, and their consumption can be compare to taking any sort of drug. In his book "The Foundations of Nutritional Medicine" Dr. Melvin R. Werbach states, that most supplements are constructed too densely and are insoluble, therefore simply pass through the digestive system without disintegrating at all. They are excreted without any benefit. In addition, Dr. Royal Lee, claims that vitamins isolated or synthesized under laboratory conditions, are toxic and are the main cause of chemical imbalance in our body. Studies demonstrate that our body treats isolated and synthetic nutrients like foreign substances (xenobiotics). Synthetic vitamins do not function like nutrients found in foods. Food sourced nutrients function synergistically as a complex and not in isolation. Therefore, synthetic vitamins are best defined to be fractions of the whole vitamin complex, synthesized in a laboratory, and claimed to be biologically active. A good example of this process is the isolation of ascorbic acid from the vitamin C complex, and later calling it vitamin C. Similarly, isolating the alpha tocopherol from the vitamin E complex and calling it vitamin E. It is roughly estimated that a vitamin complex loses 99% of its potency and effectiveness when separated from its natural synergists.

There is a substantial cost difference between producing whole food vitamins and synthetic vitamins. The production of synthetic vitamins is substantially cheaper than the production and cultivation of natural vitamins. Companies claim that they produce natural products, but they simply fail to deliver this promise. The loophole that all manufacturers use to their benefit, is the fact that the required by law percentage of 'natural' substances (in order to be able to label it 'natural) varies from country to country. Carefully planned marketing strategies and wording labels some supplements 'natural' when, in fact, they are far from it.
